Dementia Action Week: Tour Leader Dementia Training

So far, in 2024, we have provided tours to 465 residents living with dementia.

On average, 44% of residents who participate in Myley Tours are living with dementia.

This week is Dementia Action Week, an annual event organised by the Alzheimer's Society to raise awareness, encourage support, and fight the stigma surrounding dementia. Find out more about Dementia Action Week here.

Myley knows just how important it is to support those with dementia and we want to highlight the importance of Dementia Awareness Training, something that our Tour Leaders undertook, specifically for transport staff and facilitated by the Alzheimer’s Society.

This training has benefitted our Tour Leaders who interact daily with older adults living with dementia. The course covered communication techniques, recognising signs of distress, empathy and respect and a better understanding of dementia.

Understanding dementia helps our Tour Leaders to confidently recognise passengers who may require special assistance or support due to cognitive impairments. Being aware of dementia passengers contributes to making our service more accessible and better equipped to accommodate these individuals.

This awareness is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the wellbeing of residents, as well as overall safety.

‘Five of our dementia residents went to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom where they all experienced ballroom dancing and it brought back so many memories. Our amazing bus driver John, got us all there safely as normal, made sure every single one of our dementia residents was okay and reassured everyone. We can’t thank you enough John for your all your hard work thank you so much yet again amazing man and especially towards our residents which you made feel very safe and secure on their journey there and back.’ - Demi Moore, Activities Coordinator at Fleetwood Hall on a recent Myley tour.
